Week 3 - The World, Continents & Joseph

Week 3 (already?) is our last week prepping for our journey around the world in school. We are learning about the continents and oceans. I've decided to let B finish Readwell where we left off last year since she's having a little bit of trouble with the A Beka right now. She'll learn the "ar" sound and some of her blends this week and K will learn the letter M and the words me and I'm.

Week 2 - Earth, Maps & Noah's Ark

Our week 2 lessons and activities will focus on Earth, Maps & Noah's Ark. During this week we will talk about the world and some of its features, as well as learn about how to read and create maps. K will learn about the letter E through Readwell and will learn the sight word "see" as he learns about the ee sound. B will continue with the A Beka reading books as she reviews some of the sight words she already knows and practices sounding out the ones that she doesn't know as well. We will work on counting by 2's and basic addition when talking about the story of Noah and his family.

Day 3 - Space & Creation Projects

We spent most of today reviewing what we've learned so far this week and working on some projects that I had intended us to have already begun. The first is a creation booklet that goes through the 7 days of Creation. We talked about the first 4 days and did the first 4 pages of the booklet.

K is doing a great job with the Readwell program and though I realize it will get much harder and could possibly get to be difficult for him (I think it is actually intended for the Kindergarten level) I feel like we can do the program at his pace and take our time when it gets too tough.

We spent some time talking about the moon and why it seems to appear different. We watched a YouTube video that helped explain the moon's cycle and during our morning snack time we used oreos to talk about the phases of the moon.

I have to share this fun app that I found from another blogger that shows where the planets, sun, moon and stars are located by looking through your phone. Its called SkyView Free and it is so much fun! We enjoyed using it to find some of the planets, look at some of the constellations and locate the moon.

Day 2: More Creation & Solar System

Day 2 of BKS Prep is in the books though it didn't go as well as yesterday. For starters, I don't think I was as prepared for today's schedule as the first day. K complained that we did school yesterday so why do we have to do it again and pretty much kept that way of thinking for the full stretch of activities.

We were able to fly through our morning group time and worksheets and spent a little time talking about the Creation story and practicing our Bible verse. I am proud of how well they are doing with the verse and was pleasantly surprised thrilled later in the afternoon when K randomly came to me and recited the verse on his own. He is doing better with school than I expected but I've come to grips with the fact that he won't be the eager to please and ready to learn student that B has been. K never lets on that hes paying attention or learning the information you are teaching him, yet when you least expect it he demonstrates that hes been learning the whole time.

Our calendar from Amazon.com that we update every morning (and sometimes throughout the day if the weather changes.)

After our Bible time we read The Cat and the Hat Knows A Lot About That: All About Our Solar System. The kids like the Cat in the Hat series and the book is full of great information about space, the planets, the sun and moon etc.  The book reads in rhyme the way all of the other other Cat books do so its fun to read and works well in holding everyone's attention.

For lunch the kids ate Pizza Planets (aka pizza lunchables.) I'm not sure how much they really payed attention to my instructions to decorate their plants but they enjoyed devouring them!

After some play time and a few errands we watched The Magic School Bus Gains Weight on Netflix. During this episode the kids visit the Moon and other planets to learn about gravity. We then watched the Peg + Cat episode where they go to the moon and have to rebuild the rocket with patterns and numbers. I LOVE Peg + Cat and the kids like it a lot too - especially B. The story lines are interesting and unique, the characters and scenes aren't too flashy or animated and each episode is jam packed with math elements. Sorting, counting, shapes, patterns, addition, etc.  I am thrilled to know that Netflix has the first season and that we can pull from there for math learning!

Day 1 - Creation, Outer Space & All About Me

Today was our official first day of school at BKS Preparatory School!

B was more excited than anyone about starting school today. She's been ready to have some activities and projects to do. I had their circle rugs set out this morning with their worksheets to start off the day after breakfast. I think she shoveled in her breakfast in less than a minute so she could get started on her coloring page.

I got these circle rugs at Target for $9.99 each. They make a perfect "spot-marker" to teach little ones to stay in their places during our morning group time activities.

After a color by numbers activity worksheet to start off the morning, we used YouTube on the tv to do our morning group time. I made a playlist to use so it starts and just runs through each of the videos, though I stop it after the Pledge of Allegiance to do our morning prayer and Bible verse. The playlist includes the Pledge, Books of the Bible song, Days of the Week song, Months of the Year song and Count to 100 rap song. B is already familiar with all of these things so she was able to sing a long to a few of them, but K just watched. I know as they hear the song every morning they'll be able to pick up all of the words and learn the skills as they dance around and have some fun. Check out our Morning Group Time playlist!

We are memorizing Genesis 1:1 this week so we used hand motions to help us remember it. K surprised me at how well he did at this. I've never tried teaching him scripture yet and I'm encouraged to see that he'll be able to keep up with us as we memorize verses each week.

Our Bible lesson was Day 1 of the Creation. We read Genesis 1:1-5 in our Adventure Bible and talked about how God created the Day and Night. We will do some Days of Creation crafts later in the week, so we didn't do anything today, but we did go into a dark closet to retell the story in the dark and the kids loved how the light came on when God said, "Let there be light!" We did that part a couple of times.

We are studying outer space this week and I plan to introduce some vocabulary terms to them throughout the week. Today we learned the words outer space, galaxy, Milky Way, sun and moon. We read ME and My Place in Space together and learned about something special about each planet. We discussed the sun and moon, what makes up a galaxy and how long it would take to get to another galaxy. B already had some knowledge of this and K seemed to learn a lot though we almost passed his attention span capacity. This was a cute book to use and we ended by discussing how the same powerful God that made the Earth and outer space loves and takes good care of us too.

After group reading time the kids broke up into different reading activities. B had a handwriting worksheet of the planet names that I made her through HandwritingWorksheets.com while I worked with K through the first lesson of Readwell. We worked on the letter S and learned the word "I" as the lesson taught him how to read using picture words. He did a great job with it considering his age and the fact we've never done learning activities with him before.

K was over school after his reading time and went to play while I let B read through her activity. We are using the A Beka reading program with her.  Today's paper booklet, I Learn to Read Book A, was a little below her reading level as it was mainly three letter words that can be sounded out pretty easily, but it was a good review for us to build upon. I also think it helped boost her confidence a good bit because she knew most of the words and was able to quickly sound out the ones that she didn't know right away. I like that the books are little paperback individual books so she has the satisfaction of reading a book all the way through instead of having to wait until another day to finish it.

After our reading time we had a quick snack to review our lessons this morning.  K was able to remember that our galaxy's name had something to do with milk and B helped him out so they got Milky Way mini bars as a treat.

For Math time today we watched LeapFrog's Math Adventure to the Moon video on Netflix. It was a good middle level video as we counted to 10 together many times throughout the show, but also talked about shapes, patterns and sorting. At one point we counted by 2's, 5's and 10's which was better for B's level.

I found an All About Me activity worksheet on Pinterest and helped the kids complete it. I helped K write his name and then let him answer questions for me but B insisted on writing all of her own words and just asked me to help her spell an occasional word. I resisted the urge many times to correct her letters or spelling, but reminded myself that this was an "All About Me" activity and each of those little "errors" were special parts that I will be able to cherish.

We were done by 11:00 a.m. with some time to play before lunch. At some point I plan to have them go back and draw or write in their composition books about what they learned today since I forgot to do that this morning. Their journals will be a way for them to keep track each day of what they are learning and for us to look back at how far they've come throughout the year.

All in all I think we had a successful first day of school and I am energized by how happy they seem and how much I enjoyed teaching and learning with them.

Week 1 - Outer Space

Our Week 1 activities are themed around Outer Space and the days of Creation. K is learning about the letter S and the sound it makes and is just learning to trace letters while B is starting the A Beka reader books and is working on handwriting her name. We have several worksheets, videos, activities, snack ideas and books to use this week as we begin our studies.

See this week's Pinterest Board.

Let the Preparations Begin

We are excited about starting school around here and preparations are underway!

The kids have their first backpacks and matching folders to keep up with their work and supplies. I was pleasantly surprised at how excited they were about their backpacks once I got home - even through their fatigue from having the stomach virus for two days!

On Tuesday, we took a trip to the library to get some books. This was Brooklee's first time going to the library to look at and pick out books (she's been to a library with a friend for a Cat in the Hat presentation before) and Kellan's first time ever going to a library. Brooklee must have thought that the goal was to collect as many books as possible so filled her backpack full of books in which we had to review and narrow down before leaving. Kellan picked out a book right away and then headed straight for the train table to play. Sadie Quinn started off in her stroller reaching for all of the toys on the train table and trowing them to the floor until they were all out of reach. Once she was able to get out of the stroller, we chased her around the Children's Wing of the library as we hurried to finish our final selections before she created disaster!

I am very thankful to have a nice library nearby for the kids to enjoy and to get resources for our lessons as we begin school. The cost of books can add up (even the cheap ones on Amazon) and we've run out of room to store them all. Its such a blessing to have the option of going to the library and borrowing books that we need for our lessons and not having to find a place for them on our already overcrowded bookshelves! And its even more convenient to be able to find and reserve the book online ahead of time and pick it up when you get ready.

The past few days have been spent making lesson plans, researching ideas, collecting books, printing worksheets, ordering supplies (thank goodness for Amazon Prime's 2 day shipping!) and getting ready to hit the ground running next week. Brooklee is so eager to get started and has asked me a million times (and counting) this week if we can start school, do a worksheet, make something, etc. Today I pushed past my perfectionist hangups and let her help me make the color chart that we will use. So what if its not perfect, right? She did a great job coloring and cutting out each bucket, pasting them to the poster and matching the names with them. I'd honestly had plans to help her to ensure it was all done correctly, but apparently she didn't need any help and was ready to move on to another project in no time.

I am still scurrying around trying to get some last minute plans in place before we begin so I don't feel so unorganized and unprepared. I have to keep in mind that at this point the kids want to learn through fun activities together. They won't care if everything doesn't get done or if it doesn't look perfect - even if it drives me bonkers! I will have to keep reminding myself that this year as I try to remember the reasons that we homeschool have nothing with raising the best, smartest or most talented kids. Instead we pray that our choice to homeschool will result in children who love Jesus, are confident in who he created them to be and are gaining a Biblical worldview as they learn how fun it is to learn about the world that God created for us.

Welcome to BKS Preparatory School
